You're the closest to heaven that I'll ever be
And I don't want to go home right now
And all I can taste is this moment
And all I can breathe is your life
Melancholic- She is quite reserved in nature though will put up a front of happiness. She used to see the world as a place of wonder until the harsh realities got in the way. She was a free spirit, especially as a child, but as she has grown she has become more realistic and relatively negative about how life is. These thoughts usually leave her with a bitter taste in her mouth and she isn't content with where she is
Dreamer-Her parents always called her a free spirit as a child and although her demeanor has changed with age, she still holds onto that desire for something more. She day dreams often and thinks of the future where she hopes things can go back to her version of normal. She has lofty ambitions and tries to keep her hopes up high.
Goal Orientated- Iris isn't one to let minor set backs keep her from reaching for what she wants. She works hard and enjoys putting together a list of stepping stones to get to where she wants to be, although some goals may not be as feasible as others.
Compassionate-She's always had a soft side for others. She puts on her cheery persona so people don't have to worry about her. She is more concerned with helping other people with their problems and putting them first. She doesn't want anyone to think about what she needs or sacrifice something for her.
Naïve-Although she has been hit with the cold hand of reality Iris is still naive when it comes to certain things. She doesn't quite understand that her situation has some permanence to it and that everything isn't going to be alright in the end. Nothing will be how it used to and she hasn't come to terms with it yet. She stills dreams of a wonderful reunion with her mother.
Resentful-She doesn't thank life for the hand she was dealt. She doesn't understand why this had to happen to her. She is angry at everyone involved even though she doesn't want to acknowledge those emotions, after all, it all happened because people wanted to help her, so maybe it was all her fault? She can't quite understand it all still, so her resentfulness has made things harder.
And sooner or later, it's over
I just don't wanna miss you tonight
And I don't want the world to see me
'Cause I don't think that they'd understand
When everything's made to be broken
Her childhood was one that she says would be made of wonder. She lived in awesome Volkswagen van with her tambourine playing mother who seemed to know everything about the benefits of living off the land and a father who could build nothing out of anything. She thought it was magical. Her mom was a fairy who could heal with any plant and they were always traveling, the smell of weed and watching spoons heat up just seemed like another part of the magic, any danger she was in, she was oblivious to. Her Dad worked odd jobs in every town they stayed in so they could afford the basics until a job went wrong. He fell from a great height and died upon impact. His leaving the world sent her mother into a farther spiral. Her talents didn't get her very far and in order to support herself and her child, who was just reaching the age of eight, she had to invite men into her van or motel rooms while Iris waited outside, oblivious to it all, usually fast asleep under whatever drug her Mom gave her. This was all normal to her. She still traveled all the time, never went to school, it was awesome despite having lost her Dad. She and her Mom continued this for nearly two years until her Mom found a town and stayed too long. Eventually the people who lived there began to notice the child running around on her own and called the authorities.
The investigation found Iris's mother, Leia unable to properly care of her and took her into CPS until family could be located. Leia grew up in a rather strict household and when she found out she was pregnant she took off without a word, her parents didn't even know they had a grandchild out there until they were given a call asking if they could take the little girl in. Although her grandparents were fairly old by this point and her newly discovered aunt was out in college, they took her in and for the first time Iris had a stable home. It took a lot of time, therapy, and run away attempts until she finally accepted the love her grandparents had to offer. Once her Mom was back in the same state that Iris was in they began visitation but after every visit Leia's fragile mental health began to show. her brain was permanently damage from the years of drugs and during one visit she cracked, grabbing her daughter and trying to run. Iris was terrified but also thrilled at the same time, she missed the life of adventure and for a few days they were on the road, but it didn't take her Mom long to stop, make money, and spend it all on drugs while Iris was huddled in their car. She was with her Mom for a week, she ate only candy bars and watched with fear as her mom talked to herself and gave her daughter the most evil of looks, whispering that she was the devil who ruined her life.
Iris believed it, even after the flashing blue and red lights came and took her away once again. Sometimes she can still hear the screams of her Mom as she was taken away by paramedics to be put into an institute permanently. Their visits were terminated, being deemed too unsafe for Iris and detrimental to her own health, so her grandparents gained her guardianship and for a while it was okay. Sure they were more strict but she was always full and had attention. She was privately tutored to catch up with the other kids her age and she even got to bond with her aunt who came home from college during the holidays. Iris kind of thinks of her as a big sister, though as she gets older she wonders why no one came for her sooner. Were they so caught up in their own lives that no one cared enough about her Mom to see where she was?
As she adjusted to this new life there was another tragedy. Her home caught fire. There was faulty wiring in her grandparents master bedroom. They didn't stand a chance. Iris barely made it out alive. If it wasn't for the fire fighters she would be dead and sometimes she wishes she was. Once again she was left alone, in the care of a group home until a living arrangement could be found. Iris was scared. She hadn't been able to contact her aunt or anyone in the weeks she sat there until finally her aunt came through the door and took her to a new home. Though Iris thought that this new home would be in another state, she was surprised when her aunt take her just outside of Tidewater, up an old dirt road and to a cabin where kennels and chain link fences divide the property. Iris was confused at first but followed along with her aunt, learning about this new life but as these guidelines were laid out she felt uneasy, wondering when all this would just come crashing down again.
She wanted to go out but her aunt was too scared and kept her close for a year until Iris's continuous begging got to her. She wanted to try to be independent and go to Tidewater High School, her aunt had gone there and she turned out fine, so why couldn't she go too? After making a few compromises her aunt agreed, letting Iris live on campus but under the condition that she call her every other day and come home every other weekend. Iris agreed and is happily attending the school, though her free spirit still runs through her and she wonders if she could do what her parents did, but in the right way. Freedom was something so fleeting and she doesn't want to waste it more than she has to even with the knowledge of her mother still haunting her with guilt.
I just want you to know who I am
And you can't fight the tears that ain't coming
Or the moment of truth in your lies
When everything feels like the movies
