Before he went to bed he grabbed my hand and said

His Dad had been his best friend. They did everything together. While his Mom tended to the house and to his sisters, three to be exact, Denver and his Dad Paul often went off together to get some fresh air that was "free of estrogen" and went to be "men". Their time together was spent golfing, fishing, playing poker with chocolate chip cookies as prizes, and so much more. His Dad was always there for him it was like nothing could tear them a part. His Dad scared away the monsters under his bed and always took care of the family. He was a great man and what made him greater was that he was willing to step up and fight for his country when it needed him. Paul was close to retirement from the army when the war began and he told his family he would do one more tour then come home for good. The family believed him. He always came back after all. There was no family without him. Denver still remembers the day he left, the tears that streamed down his cheeks when he had to say good bye. His Dad told him to buck up and that everything would be okay. Denver would be the man of the house until he got back.

Paul never came back alive. His squad was taken out by a road side bomb that spared no lives. The news tore the family and Denver can vividly remember that funeral but everything after it was like a blur. His Mom was quiet, she had lost her spark, his older sisters no longer laughed or played and he was left to fight off those scary monsters that hid under his bed. It was like each person was in their own world and only came together at the surface level. As he grew up it only got worse.

His Mom ended up remarrying a man named Todd who was overly nice though never tried to really connect with the kids. Their home didn't feel right and they moved to a new city. Everything just seemed so forced, especially after his Mom gave birth to his half brother. By then his older sisters were old enough to move out and Denver was left with what felt strangers. As soon as high school came around Denver asked to go to Tidewater. His Mom agreed and he has been here ever since. He took to music-playing guitar mostly, and making new friends. He belongs to a close knit group where he takes the role of the leader. He keeps moral up by telling jokes and coming up with ideas of what to do. He loves to entertain them, making them happy makes him lose focus on his so called family.

Before I left, he hugged my neck and said

Denver is a loyal person who considers his friends like his family. He likes to find the fun in any situation and makes jokes. He also likes to made his blood pump like crazy through doing crazy stunts. Anything that makes him feel alive is worth the risk, he isn't someone who says no to a dare. He loves music and reading and school doesn't keep a lot of his attention. He likes to socialize more than anything else and he does enjoy positive attention. He is highly protective of his friends, if you make enemies with one of them then you're automatically an enemy of his. He will defend almost anyone or try to cheer them up. He doesn't like seeing others sad and will do what he can to cheer them up, even if it's at his own expense.
